Swiss Olympic Medical Center

Sports medicine deals with people who want to be active – from beginners to elite athletes. How well do you know your body? What are your limits? What effect does endurance training have on your body? How can you optimise your training? Our core areas of expertise are sports medicine and laboratory tests, as well as performance diagnostics, orthomolecular treatment methods and medical training advice. In collaboration with our sports physicians, the Swiss Olympic Medical Center Bad Ragaz will support you in achieving your fitness goals.

Competences

Headed by doctors Christian Schlegel and Christian Hoppe, our sports medicine department received official recognition as a Swiss Olympic Medical Center in 2004. We can provide you with advice and support in the following areas:

  • Check-ups and performance diagnostics
  • Optimisation of physical and mental performance
  • Sports medicine in the event of fatigue and reduced performance
  • Injury prevention
  • Management of strains
  • Gait analysis (insole adjustment as required)
  • Sports physiotherapy movement analysis
  • Sport-specific personal training
  • Inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation training
  • Proper nutrition for athletes
  • Training advice and planning

Preventive medical check

Body Composition

Body composition is an essential component of good nutritional and health counselling. Weight, however, tells only half the story. It is important to know the precise amounts of body fat and muscle mass.

Skin fold measurement

Special callipers are used to measure the skin fold thickness at 7 points on the body. The shares of body fat and muscle mass are determined on the basis of sex, age, weight and the sum of the skin folds. This is an accurate and highly reproducible technique for measuring body fat and muscle mass, and is employed predominantly in competitive sport.

Gait and running analysis

This examination is worthwhile if pain is being experienced in the hip joints, knee joints, foot joints and tendons. It also enables valuable information on optimal loading to be obtained, particularly for patients with osteoarthritis in the knee or hip joints.

Stress-ECG

During a stress ECG, the electrical activity of the heart is recorded under increasing resistance on the bicycle ergometer. In addition, blood pressure is measured at each level of stress. If training advice is desired as well, the lactate (lactic acid) concentration may also be determined in this test protocol.

Silence ECG

Suction electrodes attached to the chest are used to record the electrical activity of the heart. Using these graphs, the doctor is able to identify heart diseases.

Assessment of physical performance

Magglingen trunk strength test

The Magglingen trunk strength test is a three-part test of trunk muscle strength and endurance. Trunk strength is important in almost every sport as well as to prevent back pain and improper biomechanical stress.

Contrex test

The Contrex is a device to measure both isokinetic force (constant speed) and the forces relating to the knee joint (comparison of left and right, flexors/extensors) after an injury or in the case of osteoarthritis. This test enables imbalances in the musculature to be identified.

Jumping power measurement

The explosive strength of the lower extremities is measured by means of four different jumps (Quattro) on the force measurement plate. The measurement of explosive strength is of great importance in all sports disciplines in which speed and jumping power play a role.

Lactate threshold test

In the lactate threshold test, the lactic acid concentration in the blood, the heart rate and perceived exertion are measured during a stress phase. Based on these values it is possible to determine precisely the pulse range (intensity) in which the training should be carried out.

Lactate threshold test with ergospirometire

Measurement of the respiratory parameters in addition to the values from the lactate threshold test.

Medical check-ups

Lung functioning test (Spirometry)

Spirometry is a basic test to assess lung function. Simple spirometry involves measuring maximum lung capacity and how much of the air can be exhaled in the first second. In addition, the maximum flow rate is measured when inhaling and exhaling.

Metacholine challenge test

Methacholine challenge test The subject inhales a defined quantity of an irritant that results in constriction of the bronchial tubes in the event of intolerance. The test is important for the diagnosis and monitoring of progress in patients with bronchial asthma.

Bodyplethysmography

During this investigation, the volume of air is measured that remains in the lungs after exhaling fully, in addition to the parameters measured by spirometry. Respiratory tract resistance can also be determined, and measurements to assess the gas exchange in the lungs are usually carried out as well.

Stress asthma test

A defined stress test on a treadmill or bicycle ergometer is used in an attempt to trigger breathing difficulties in a sportsperson. Following this provocation test, lung function is measured to a standard protocol in order to verify any possible stress-induced restriction of the bronchial tubes.

Analysis of stress level

Recovery and sleep quality, measuring heartbeat variation over 24 hours.
